چکیده

Understanding the scattering mechanisms from the ground surface in the presence of different vegetation densities is necessary for the interpretation of P-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) observations and for the design of geophysical retrieval algorithms. In this study, a quantitative analysis of vegetation and soil scattering mechanisms estimated from the observations of an airborne P-band SAR instrument across nine different biomes in North America is presented. The goal is to apply a hybrid (modeland eigenbased) three component decomposition approach to separate the contributions of surface, double-bounce and vegetation volume scattering across a wide range of biome conditions. The decomposition makes no prior assumptions about vegetation structure. We characterize the dynamics of the decomposition across different North American biomes and assess their characteristic range. Impacts of vegetation cover seasonality and soil surface roughness on the contributions of each scattering mechanism are also investigated. Observations used here are part of the NASA Airborne Microwave Observatory of Subcanopy and Subsurface (AirMOSS) mission and data have been collected between 2013 and 2015. − Interferometric decomposition permits the identification of arbitrary scattering mechanisms in two interferometric SAR images and the optimisation of the interferometric coherence, using mathematically independent phase centres related to these scattering mechanisms. Polarimetric SAR interferometry (Pol-InSAR) is sensitive to the distribution of oriented objects in vegetation layers. It has b...

Soil Moisture Retrieval from Polarimetric Sar Data: a Short Review of Existing Methods and a New One

Soil moisture retrieval from SAR data is not an easy task, especially in presence of vegetation cover. Accordingly, in recent years several methods for soil-moisture retrieval under vegetation cover have been developed, relying on model-based or hybrid polarimetric targetdecomposition techniques. However, most of these decomposition techniques suffer from the so-called negative-power problem, w...

Polarimetric Analysis of Airborne Dlr-esar Data for Vegetation Characterization

Polarimetry is the measurement and interpretation of different polarizations of electro-magnetic waves. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) has been proven to be a powerful earth observation tool and emerging Polarimetric SAR (POLSAR) adds another dimension to SAR information content. Polarimetric SAR has been used in retrieval of soil moisture and surface roughness, snow and ice mapping and land-co...

Characterization of Glacier Subsurface Using Sar Polarimetry at L- and P-band

Glaciers and ice sheets represent sensitive indicators of climate change being their properties strictly related to the environmental temperature and its fluctuations. Therefore, the interest in studying these components of the Cryosphere has strongly increased in recent years. The need of observations on a global scale has promoted airborne and satellite remote sensing techniques for glaciolog...

Identification of Soil Freezing and Thawing States Using SAR Polarimetry at C-Band

The monitoring of soil freezing and thawing states over large areas is very challenging on ground. In order to investigate the potential and the limitations of space-borne SAR polarimetry at C-band for soil state survey, analyses were conducted on an entire winter time series of fully polarimetric RADARSAT-2 data from 2011/2012 to identify freezing as well as thawing states within the soil. The...
